Just outside Truckee, Donner Memorial State Park marks the site where the Donner Party was trapped by ferocious Sierra snows during the winter of 1846 —“47 —” one of the most haunting stories of the westward migration. The Pioneer Monument's tall base shows just how deep the snow lay that winter.
The park's modern visitor center and Emigrant Trail Museum tell the story thoughtfully, and the setting is gorgeous: trails, picnic areas and a beach on the clear waters of Donner Lake make it as much a place to relax as to reflect.
