Built in the 1930s for the eccentric millionaire George Whittell Jr., Thunderbird Lodge is a beautifully crafted stone estate hidden on the East Shore between Incline Village and Sand Harbor. Whittell once owned much of the Nevada shoreline, and the lodge is full of his extravagances —” including a 600-foot lighted tunnel cut through the rock to the boathouse.
That boathouse still shelters the Thunderbird, a gleaming wooden yacht that's a star in its own right. Guided tours, often reached by boat from Incline Village, are run by the preservation society that saved the estate.
