Sugar Bowl Resort

Tahoe's original resort — gondola-accessed, storm-battered and proudly independent since 1939.

Where It Started

Tahoe's First — and Snowiest — Resort

Opened in 1939, Sugar Bowl is the oldest ski resort in the Tahoe area and one of the few still independently owned. It sits right on Donner Summit, squarely in the path of incoming storms — it routinely racks up some of the deepest snow totals in California.

A gondola carries you from the parking area across a small valley to the base village, and four peaks of varied terrain spread out from there. With no through-traffic and a low-key vibe, it feels a world away from the bigger corporate resorts nearby.

Right off I-80: Sugar Bowl is the easiest big resort to reach from the Bay Area, but Donner Summit gets hammered in storms. Carry chains, check I-80 road conditions, and confirm lift and snow status on the official site before heading up.
