Day Trip · 30 —“40 min from the North Shore

Truckee

A gold-rush-era railroad town that grew into the Sierra's most charming main street —” history, food and Donner Lake in one easy day.

Start Downtown

Commercial Row

Truckee grew up around the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s, and its historic main drag —” Commercial Row —” still faces the working tracks. Today the false-front buildings hold mountain outfitters, galleries, antique shops and some of the best food in the Sierra, all walkable in an afternoon.

Don't miss the Old Jail Museum, built in 1875 and one of the few surviving stone jails of its era in the West (you can walk through the original cells), and the small but excellent Museum of Truckee History near the depot. In summer, Truckee Thursdays turns downtown into a street fair with live music, food stalls and a beer garden.

The Truckee Checklist

Morning

Coffee & a Wander

Grab coffee and a pastry at Coffeebar on Donner Pass Road, then browse Commercial Row while it's quiet. Trains still rumble through —” kids (and adults) love watching from the depot platform.

Midday

Donner Memorial State Park

Ten minutes west, the Donner Memorial museum tells the sobering story of the Donner Party alongside railroad and Native history —” one of the best small museums in the Sierra.

Afternoon

Donner Lake or the Legacy Trail

Swim or paddle at Donner Lake's West End Beach in summer, or walk and bike a stretch of the paved Truckee River Legacy Trail along the river (6 miles from Truckee River Regional Park to Glenshire —” see our biking guide). In winter, swap this for a ski day at nearby Northstar or Sugar Bowl.

Evening

Dinner & a Local Pint

Truckee punches far above its weight at the table: Moody's Bistro for a proper dinner (live jazz many nights), FiftyFifty Brewing Co. for the award-winning Eclipse stouts, or the century-old Bar of America on the main corner. See our Food & Drink guide for details.

Getting there: From the North Shore, Truckee is ~15 miles up CA-267 from Kings Beach or CA-89 from Tahoe City —” about 30 —“40 minutes. Both roads are plowed year-round but carry chains in winter storms. Parking downtown is paid in the core blocks; the lots by the depot are easiest.
